The British Compressed Gases Association (BCGA) recently hosted a conference focused on key industry topics including health, safety, environmental responsibility, and the future of the compressed gases sector.

Stuart Roberts, Technical Sales Manager of GCE Valves, represented the company during the discussions. Stuart currently serves as Chairman of the BCGA Cylinders & Valves Technical Subcommittee and brings more than 30 years of experience within the industrial gas industry, including over five years within GCE's valves business.

One of the major topics discussed during the conference was the growing misuse of gases such as nitrous oxide and helium. While both gases continue to serve legitimate purposes across healthcare, food, industrial, and scientific applications, increasing misuse and improper disposal have created wider public safety and environmental concerns.

Industry discussions highlighted the importance of safe handling practices, regulatory collaboration, and greater awareness surrounding the full lifecycle of compressed gases. Particular attention was given to the risks associated with discarded gas canisters entering waste streams, where pressurised containers can create hazards for recycling facilities and waste collection systems.

Safety of the compressed gas package is a key factor in the industry, with the cylinder valve protecting the integrity of the cylinder and gas, which is of paramount importance for GCE.quote

The discussions also reinforced the increasing importance of technologies that help maintain cylinder integrity and gas purity throughout the operational lifecycle of the cylinder. Residual Pressure Valves (RPVs), designed to prevent contamination by maintaining positive pressure inside cylinders after use, continue to gain wider recognition across multiple gas applications as part of broader preventative safety practices.

Alongside technical safety discussions, Stuart also focused on the future of the industry workforce and the importance of attracting younger professionals into the sector. The session highlighted initiatives aimed at encouraging greater participation from emerging industry talent and supporting long-term knowledge sharing.

Stuart's participation at the BCGA conference reflects the wider values and responsibilities shared across GCE Group. Through ongoing involvement in industry discussions surrounding safety, regulation, and operational responsibility, GCE continues to support initiatives that promote safer and more sustainable gas handling practices across healthcare and industrial environments.

By providing technologies such as Residual Pressure Valves (RPVs) and other gas control solutions designed to maintain cylinder integrity, preserve gas purity, and improve handling safety, GCE remains committed to supporting businesses, healthcare providers, and end users in the safe and responsible use of compressed gases throughout the entire gas lifecycle.
